In 1953, Dr. Charles Fuller, a well-known Gospel radio preacher who was
once homeless, overcame his addiction and shared his
story. Intrigued by his story he was invited to Nashville to lead a
revival at the Ryman Auditorium. Fuller was so moved by the stories
of the homeless that he incorporated it into his sermons. A large
number of people in the audience spontaneously placed a freewill offering on
the platform to be used for the establishment of a place that would care for
the city’s homeless and hurting. In 1954 the Nashville Union Mission,
today known as the Nashville Rescue Mission, opened its doors to the homeless
and hurting in the community.
The Nashville Rescue Mission seeks to help Middle Tennessee by offering food,
clothing and shelter to the homeless. They also offer recovery programs for
those who seek help to make their lives more spiritual.
